Collaborations and Community Service

 

The department has contributed through its resource personnel to the Federal Ministry of Health, the WHO, UNICEF and other International and local NGOs since its inception. Some of the areas of collaboration and facilitation by members of the department include:

  1. The Control of Diarrhoeal Disease (CDD), Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) and the Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) Control Programmes in the North West Zone were supported by the UNICEF/WHO and coordinated by Prof AM Yakubu. These were successful Global child survival strategies of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
  2. The National Malaria Therapy Efficacy Surveillance Network has been facilitated by Prof WN Ogala as the North-west Zonal Team Leader
  3. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) programme has been coordinated from the department by Prof WN Ogala as the North-West Zonal Coordinator
  4. The National Technical Working Group on developing Guidelines for Emergency Obstetric and Immediate Newborn Care has Dr LW Umar as a member
  5. The National PMTCT Task Team of the HIV Division of the FMOH has Prof WN Ogala and Dr LW Umar as members. The ABUTH PMTCT programme contributes data to a National pool of the PMTCT Task Team
  6. The Paediatric Technical Working Group of the National Antiretroviral Task Team of the HIV Division of FMOH has Prof WN Ogala and Dr LW Umar as members. The HIV Division of the FMOH has published and revised several National ART and PMTCT Guidelines, Job Aids and Training Manuals since the beginning of the implementation of these programmes, of which Dr LW Umar has served as principal Contributor and Editorial Consultant
  7. The National Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) of HIV Programme of the HIV Division of FMOH has Dr LW Umar as a member.
  8. The Paediatric Antiretroviral Treatment and Care services in the department coordinated by Dr. LW Umar continue to receive support of free treatment of the APIN Nigeria and the US PEPFER program.
  9. The Nestle supported Micronutrient Deficiency Research is being coordinated by Prof. GO Ogunrinde.
  10. Collaboration with the NHS Foundation Trust of Stockport Hospital, UK on Newborn Life Support (NLS) Training. The programme coordinated by Dr. LW Umar, has trained several health workers and TBAs within ABUTH and across several health facilities in Northern Nigeria.
  11. Participation as Examiners for the Professional Fellowship Examinations (Residency training) of the Faculties of Paediatrics in both the National and West African Postgraduate Medical Colleges. All the currently serving Professors and Readers in the department are College Examiners.
  12. Participation as members of Accreditation Panels to Tertiary institutions for the Faculties of Paediatrics of both the National and West African Postgraduate Medical Colleges.
  13. Participation as members of Accreditation Panels to Tertiary institutions training pre-registration House-officers for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. All the currently serving Professors, Readers and Senior Lecturers in the department have served as members in these panels.
  14. Participation in the Saving Lives at Birth (SLAB) a national/ international research collaboration on preventing kernicterus in Nigeria the team lead for Zaria is Dr. I Abdulkadir
  15. Participation in the Essential Newborn care course (ENCC) training of health care workers in collaboration with the CHAI and Kaduna state ministry of health the team from Zaria led by Dr. I Abdulkadir.
